As always, thanks for the link, Tom!
Coincidentally, I'm in the middle of reading "On The Road" for the first time in many years. It doesn't surprise me that the musicality of that book remains hidden to some critics. Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek wrote in his autobiography that without "On the Road" there would be no Doors. I didn't care that much for the film though.
And if there were no Doors, we could hear Manzarek's magnificent music without having to listen to that asshole.
Manzarek has lots of music without Jim Morrison if that's the asshole you mean. He also has music without the other two Door members, if one of those are the asshole you mean. "That asshole" seems a pretty broad category.
Arthur Hlavaty was defeated by the captcha barrier, but he wanted to post as a reply:
Sorry, should make myself clearer. The asshole is the guy who thought he was a poet and wrote lines like "mute nostril agony" (which sounds like bad coke but was actually his horsed vessel song) and "Killer on the road/His mind is squirming like a toad." Morrison's main accomplishment was packing the whole Elvis collapse--sex god to fat junkie to corpse--into less than five years (perhaps with extra credit for not knowing when and how it would end when he did his).
I like Morrison's poetry.
